Shorthanded Chesapeake Wrestling Holding Its Own

Despite giving up 18 points by forfeiting several weight classes in every match this year, the Chesapeake wrestling team is nonetheless holding its own in 2012-2013. The Cougars have posted a 7-9 record through January 18, with four of the nine losses coming by less than the 18 points they have relinquished in forfeit. Seniors RJ Blakeney, Austin Councill, Darrell Miner, Austin Moore, Robbie Klebe, Jordan Swigert and Phil Hoover have been steady in leading the team through what coach Chuck Rollins describes as a rebuilding year.

“The seniors have done a great job keeping the team focused on the task at hand as we rebuild,” said Rollins, who noted that underclassmen Nick Vila, Dalton Quarles, Troy Kalkman and Nick Costagliola, among others, have been strong for the Cougars and will be important members of the program moving forward. “We have a solid core group of kids that will return next year and make this team better in the years to come.”

Of course, that is not to say that this year is not top priority.

“For the weight classes that do fill, we are expecting many to place well in the counties, regions and states,” said Rollins.
