On May 16, the Archbishop Spalding softball team defeated Mount de Sales 3-1 at Bachman Park to win the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship for the second straight year.
Wins over Mercy and Seton Keough preceded the Cavaliers’ championship win over Mt. de Sales and gave Spalding a 17-4 overall record for the season.
“As a coach, I am most proud of these young ladies for truly playing like a team,” said head coach Nicki Trumpler. “The leadership of our captains, Sammi Johnson and Katie Seidl, helped to guide our team. This was a special group who played day in and day out for one another and for the team. Our offense was strong from top to bottom, with any part of our line up being able to produce a key hit.”
Seidl was the winning pitcher in the IAAM A final and the Cavaliers’ top ace throughout the season, going 16-3 over 109 innings with 111 strikeouts and a 1.86 ERA while also batting .528 and driving in 45 runs. Johnson, the team’s shortstop, was an offensive force, batting .551 and slugging an astounding .826 with 38 hits in 69 at bats, 28 RBI, 36 runs scored and and 10 steals. Caroline Wasko (.500/.561, 20 RBI), Mary Angela Sena (.436/.618, 20 RBI), Jordan Johnson (.431, 31 hits) and Jill Berkshire (.353, 20 RBI) were top producers as well for Spalding. Seidl, Sammi Johnson and Sena were all selected to the All-IAAM A Conference team.
The 2016 IAAM A Conference champion Archbishop Spalding softball players are Caroline Giordano, Jordan Johnson, Caroline Wasko, Angela Sena, Victoria Giordano, Alex Robinson, Aubrey Gibson, Sammi Johnson, Grace Price, Catherine Harding, Jill Berkshire, Brandy Walterhoefer and Katie Seidl.
