This summer, seven ladies’ billiards players traveled as a team to Las Vegas, Nevada, to compete in the American Poolplayers Association Ladies 8-Ball Division and returned to Gambrills as national champions.
Named Boobie Trap, the local team consisting of Charsett Brown, Charlynn Dzambo, Karen Briscoe, Beverlee Dillow, Keri Williams, Suzi Holtz and Cynthia Barrow went undefeated at the competition, going 6-0 to top the field of 65 teams and win the tournament championship and its accompanying $10,000 grand prize. The squad was the only Maryland team in the competition and beat teams from all over North America in sweeping through the winner’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament, knocking off the Ball Breakers of Danville, Illinois, in the semifinals and St. Kitts Chicks of Burlington, Ontario, in the championship final.
Ranging in age from 30-58, the Gambrills-based players have between one and 15 years’ pool-playing experience, have been playing together as a team for nine months at Bank Shot Bar & Grill in Laurel and had never won a national championship before.
“It was very emotional, high-energy,” said Barrow. “Everybody was crying. It was icing on the cake.”
