As summertime approaches, I can’t think of two things that go better together on a sweltering day than baseball and cold beer.

And Maryland is home to the best of both – the Orioles are one of the top teams in the American League and craft brewers from the mountains of Western Maryland to the Ocean City boardwalk are producing award-winning beer.

In that spirit, I recently joined the Brewers Association of Maryland and the Maryland Office of Tourism at Peabody Heights Brewery in Baltimore to announce the launch of the Baseball & Brew Scorecard. This fun game encourages Marylanders and out-of-state visitors to hit the road this summer and fill out their scorecards by visiting a brewery and getting a stamp to mark each of the nine fielding positions on the baseball diamond. Upon completing your scorecard, you’ll be eligible to win the Grand Slam Maryland Baseball and Brew Experience prize.

The 60 participating breweries are located across Maryland, so you’ll have a chance to sample craft beers from across our great state — and while you travel, make sure to take in a game at Camden Yards, historic Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury or other professional ballparks in Aberdeen, Bowie, Frederick and Waldorf. You can also soak in some baseball history with a visit to Babe Ruth’s house in Baltimore, Lefty Grove’s statue in Western Maryland, the Jimmie Foxx museum on the Eastern Shore and the Walter Johnson Memorial in Montgomery County.

This scorecard launch coincided with the first meeting of our Reform on Tap Task Force, on which I’ll be working with 40 members representing key stakeholder groups within the beer industry to modernize Maryland’s beer laws and promote economic growth across the state. The task force will meet this summer to explore how we can make Maryland’s alcohol laws work to encourage and assist small businesses instead of hindering them.

During my time as comptroller, I have personally visited many of these craft breweries; they often serve as economic engines where other business growth soon follows, and they become excellent community partners, hosting fundraisers and other events that bring people together. It’s my hope and expectation that the task force will come up with proposals to embrace this booming industry, rather than the restrictive policies currently in place that drive them to our neighboring states.

I hope you and your family and friends have a great summer and get to touch ‘em all on the Baseball and Brew Scorecard. For more information about the scorecard and for directions or information on all breweries, visit
